Mozart, Bach, Price, Beethoven and a Gospel Version of Handel’s MessiahThe exciting season features a delightful horn concerto by Mozart, Beethoven’s enduring Symphony No. 5, a gospel-inspired rendition of Handel’s Messiah, masterpieces by Bach and a landmark symphony by trail-blazing African-American composer Florence Price.
The opening concert on October 15, 2022 at the Lancaster Middle School Theater in Kilmarnock features compositions by Mozart, Bizet and Virginia composer Adolphus Hailstork. The program includes Hailstork’s moving Fanfare on Amazing Grace, Mozart’s lovely Horn Concerto No. 4 with horn soloist Emma Potter and Bizet’s lively L’Arlesienne Suites Nos. 1 and 2.
The season continues on March 25, 2023 at the Northumberland High School Theater in Heathsville with symphonies by Florence Price and Ludwig van Beethoven. The orchestra will continue its tribute to Price’s work, performing her landmark Symphony No. 1. The concert will conclude with Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 5.
The season finale on May 20, 2023 at the Northumberland High School Theater features three classics by Johann Sebastian Bach — Orchestral Suite No. 3, Sheep May Safely Graze, Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring — and Too Hot to Handel: A Gospel Messiah. The exhilarating fusion of George Frideric Handel’s masterpiece with gospel harmony, jazz improvisation and Latin rhythms will be performed with a chorus from our diverse community.
