Mozart’s Violin Sonata in A major was composed in 1778. Filled with charm and grace, the lively sonata brilliantly balances the violin and piano throughout its two movements.
Igor Stravinsky’s witty work Suite Italienne is derived from the music he composed for the 1920 ballet Pulcinella. The adaptation of the suite for violin and piano was composed in 1932. It often is referred to as neo-classical in that it blends Baroque and classical styles with modern elements.
Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances is a breezy suite of six movements which highlights the vibrancy and beauty of the region’s rural music. Originally written for piano in 1915, the composition is based on folk songs the composer collected during his travels in Transylvania, then part of Hungary, and later, Romania.
Elgar’s Sonata for Violin and Piano in E minor was composed in 1918 near the close of World War I. The deeply moving and reflective work sensitively captures the melancholy of the period, while ending with hope and promise.
