The Northern Neck Orchestra opens its 2025-2026 concert season on Saturday, October 4 with Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Suite from Five Negro 
Melodies and Louise Farrenc’s Overture No. 1.
The performance begins with pioneering composer Louise Farrenc’s dramatic Overture No. 1, written in 1834. A virtuoso pianist and teacher, Farrenc is regarded as one of the leading women composers of the 19th century. Her compositions have gained increased recognition in recent years.

The concert continues with the Virginia premiere of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s vibrant Suite from Five Negro Melodies, derived from the composer’s expansive 24 Negro Melodies. Both are built around a foundation of African-American folk music, particularly spirituals.

The orchestra will play I’m Troubled in Mind; Don’t Be Weary, Traveler; Ringendje: Song of Conquest; They Will Not Lend Me a Child and Oloba. 

These melodies are featured in Michael Repper’s new album which celebrates the 150thanniversary of Coleridge-Taylor’s birth with the first commercial studio recording of the composer’s works. Signed copies of the album will be available for purchase at the concert.

The concert concludes with a performance of one of the most beloved symphonies in the repertory of classical music, Czech composer Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.”

The composer ingeniously blended folk influences from Bohemia and America into his vivid symphonic style, creating an enduring work that continues to move audiences with its tender melodies and irrepressible spirit.
