Piano Quartets

The Northern Neck Orchestra’s 2023-2024 Chamber Music series continues with Piano Quartets, featuring the deeply emotional music of two giants of the Romantic period – Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms.

The concert will be performed on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Good Luck Cellars, 1025 Goodluck Road in Kilmarnock by Moises Cunha, violin, Luis Eduardo Bellorin, viola, Jake Fowler, cello and André Golbert, piano.

Cunha, the Concertmaster and Principal Violinist of the Northern Neck Orchestra, is Artistic Director of the Chamber Music Series.

The concert begins with Robert Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat major. Composed in 1842, the work was very well received at its 1844 premiere in Leipzig with his wife Clara Schumann at the piano. Many believe the work was inspired by Clara, a virtuoso pianist and renowned composer.

By contrast, a distressed Johannes Brahms began composing his Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor in 1855 while in love with Clara Schumann! The dark and tempestuous work contains a two-note phrase that some suggest speaks the name of Clara.

“The piano quartets of Schumann and Brahms are poignant,
enchanting and achingly beautiful. They are filled with
the passion of the Romantic era and
the lives of their composers.”
